NRAS is a long term commitment by the Australian Government to invest in affordable rental housing. The Scheme seeks to address the shortage of affordable rental housing by offering financial incentives to the business sector and community organisations to build and rent dwellings to low and moderate income households at 20 per cent below-market rates for 10 years. NRAS aims to:
- increase the supply of new affordable rental housing;
- reduce rental costs for low and moderate income households; and
- encourage large scale investment and innovative delivery of affordable housing.
Construction of a new 600 bed purpose built residential facility at Monash’s Clayton campus commenced in August 2010 with a planned completion date of December 2011 and open for residents in early January 2012.
The new 600 bed residential facility will be made up as follows:
- Two separate residential Halls each accommodating 300 residents;
- Briggs Hall after Mrs Geraldine Briggs AO. Briggs Hall will overlook the sports fields;
- Jackomos Hall after Mrs Merle Jackomos OAM. Jackomos Hall will overlook the Jock Marshall Reserve;
More information about Geraldine Briggs AO and Mrs Merle Jackomos OAM can be found on the MRS website
