Residential Support Team

Monash Residential Services seeks to establish and maintain an environment within each of its locations that provides care, support and enrichment for residents in academic, cultural, personal, social, and recreational matters.  To provide this environment, MRS uses Residential Support Teams at all its residential sites to implement and promote an extensive range of support and academic programs.

A Residential Support Team (RST) usually consists of one the following models:

  • College Head > Deputy College Head > Residential Support Assistant > Resident Advisor(s)
  • Resident Supervisor > Residential Support Assistant > Resident Advisor(s)

In connection with accommodation matters, MRS and all its RSTs aim to:

  • supervise the welfare and conduct of residents, monitoring and regulating individual and group behaviour, and supporting residents by providing general advice and guidance in a broad range of issues;
  • develop an environment that promotes and supports the social and personal development of the residents and is conducive to study;
  • promote an environment whereby residents ‘look out for each other’;
  • develop an environment which has regard for the individual and group needs of the residents, taking into consideration the multi-cultural nature of MRS;
  • develop an environment that creates opportunities for mutually beneficial interaction between residents and helps residents develop respect for each other’s rights and freedoms; and
  • as a team, know every resident within an individual hall/residence and become aware of their well-being throughout the semester, with particular attention to those residents who are social isolates and as such may not have a ‘voice’ at MRS.

College Head

The term ‘College Head’ refers to: College Head of Clayton Residential (Halls of Residence, Normanby House and South East Flats) and Gippsland Residential. The primary purpose of the College Head is to maintain a constant and stabilising presence within the residential area of their hall/residence; providing care, support and enrichment for resident students in academic, personal, social and recreational matters. The College Head is responsible for all aspects of the general, academic and social activities of the hall and is required to oversee the development and sustenance of an environment which has special regard for the individual and group needs of students and also bearing in mind the multicultural nature and regional backgrounds of members of the hall / residence. Depending on the site, the College Head functions under the supervision of and is accountable to the Director, MRS or relevant Site Manager.

Deputy College Head / Residential Supervisor

The term ‘Residential Supervisor’ or ‘Deputy College Head’ refers to a Deputy College Head of Clayton Residential (Halls of Residence and Normanby House) or a Residential Supervisor of Berwick Residential, Caulfield Residential and Peninsula Residential. The primary purpose of the Deputy College Head / Residential Supervisor is to assist the College Head / Site Manager in providing care, support and enrichment for resident students in academic, personal, social and recreational matters within the hall / residence.  The Deputy College Head / Residential Supervisor will assist the College Head / Site Manager with the general, academic and social activities of the hall/residence.  The Deputy College Head will be under the supervision of and is accountable to the College Head.  The Residential Supervisor will be under the supervision of and is accountable to the relevant Site Manager.

Residential Support Assistant

The primary purpose of the Residential Support Assistant (RSA) is to assist a Residential Supervisor or the College Head of the South East Flats in providing care, support and enrichment for resident students in academic, personal, social and recreational matters within a MRS accommodation complex.  The RSA may be required to act for the Residential Supervisor and acts under the supervision of and is accountable to the Residential Supervisor.

Resident Advisor Volunteers

One of Monash Residential Services’ Mission Goals is to provide and develop an environment within each location on campus which provides care, support and enrichment for the residential community in academic, cultural, personal, social and recreational matters. Resident Advisors contribute to the creation of a Residential Support Team within their Hall.

Monash Residential Services [MRS] gratefully acknowledges that there are current residents who demonstrate a strong commitment and willingness to undertake and be involved in a range of voluntary activities, programs and initiatives that contribute to the enhancement of community life in their Hall and wider residential community.

As volunteers, Resident Advisors cannot be rostered "on-call" – their contribution to their hall is entirely voluntary and is essentially a community and pastoral role which demonstrates a strong commitment to actively participating in, enriching and promoting community life within their Hall and wider residential community. Examples of community participation are:

·         Actively promote and participate in community life.

·         Promote and support cultural lifestyle diversity by assisting in the organisation [and particiapting in] of social, recreational and educational activities.

·         Have a strong involvement in ‘O’ Week (semester 1 and semester 2) and in re-orientation activities.

·         Assist in the assimilation of various cultures, age groups, etc. within the residences.

·         Help residents develop a respect for other residents and the property of their residence and MRS.

·         Encourage residents to participate in all residential activities.

·         Actively promote to fellow residents MRS’ initiative towards energy reduction by reducing and or recycling waste and conserving resources.
