Accommodation

  1. What are the penalties for leaving the International Mews before the end of my contract?
    Residents are responsible for the rental payment until a suitable replacement is found.

  2. Can I get temporary on campus accommodation whilst I look for alternate accommodation off campus?
    Unfortunately we do not offer temporary accommodation at the International Mews. There are a number of Hotels in Caulfield and surrounding suburbs.

  3. How do I apply for accommodation at Caulfield Residential?
    The Caulfield Residential Application Form can be downloaded from the website. Please fill in the Application Form with all the attachments and mail it to the address mentioned on the form. Payment of the Application Fee should be made in the form of a cheque payable to "Monash University", money order or bank draft payable to "Monash University" in Australian dollars. This fee cannot be paid using a credit card. Note: Please do not send cash through the mail.

  4. May I move into Caulfield Residential accommodation earlier than the nominated admission date and/or stay beyond the nominated contract expiry date?
    An early admission date can be pre-organised. This requires you to make prior arrangements with the Residential Services and Admissions Officer. Students are permitted to stay over the summer period if a Request to stay over summer form is submitted and approved by the Residential Supervisor.

  5. Do I have to sign a contract?
    Yes. Every resident staying at any Caulfield Residential site must sign a residency agreement. The length of the agreement is 10 months the dates are as per the Accommodation Fee Regulations.

  6. Can I put up picture frames, posters and other art effects in my room to give it a personal touch?
    You are allowed to put things on the walls as long as you use appropriate material e.g. Blu tack to fix them to the walls. On departure, students must ensure that all adhesive material is properly removed and the room is restored to its original condition, otherwise charges will apply.

  7. Do the Flats have cleaning staff that come in to clean my room?
    No. You are responsible for the cleanliness of your own room once you take up residency. At Caulfield Residential there is a provision for students to borrow vacuum cleaners to assist them with this task. Cleaning staff will come in once every fortnight and clean the common areas.

  8. What furniture is provided in my room?
    Your room is carpeted, heated and furnished with bed, desk, chair, bookshelves, clothes airer and built-in wardrobe. The rooms are not air-conditioned.

  9. Can I leave after my exams and pay only until then?
    Not if this is different to the defined period of your contract. If you leave earlier than the contracted dates you are responsible for the rental payments until a replacement is found.

Applications

  1. Is there an application fee and is it refundable?
    There is an application fee and it is non-refundable. Application fee details are available on the website, www.mrs.monash.edu.au/on-campus/caulfield/applications-caulfield.html. Please be advised, that your application is valid for the current year only and will be destroyed on the 31st December. If you are unable to secure a place in the current year, the Application Fee and your application cannot be transferred to the following year. If you are applying for more than one campus you need to lodge only one application and pay the Application fee only once. Application forms are site specific. Application forms can be transferred between sites should your preference change.

  2. When is the best time to apply for on campus accommodation?
    Applications for on campus accommodation are available on and after the Monash Open Day, which is usually in the month of August. The closing date for applications is the 30th November for accommodation in the following year. The closing date for semester 2 intake is the 15th of June. We continue to accept applications beyond this date.

  3. If I submit an application for on-campus accommodation, does that mean that I have secured a room?
    No. The demand for accommodation always exceeds rooms available. Submitting an Application Form simply means you will be included in the selection process. Once you have been selected, a formal Letter of Offer will be sent to you and on payment of the Building & Amenities Fee a room is secured.

  4. What do I need to submit with my application?
    You will need to submit the following with your application:
    o 2 recent passport type photos;
    o Application Fee (Non-refundable);
    o Two self addressed envelopes (size 110mm X 220mm)

  5. Can I apply for accommodation at Mews before I get my visa approval and full offer from Monash University?
    Yes you can apply for accommodation, but you should not accept the offer for accommodation and make payment of the Building & Amenities Fee before having a valid visa and offer from Monash University as the Building & Amenities Fee is not refundable.

  6. I am travelling with my wife/husband and children can we live at the Mews?
    The apartments are designed to accommodate single students only. Therefore, all students travelling with family (spouse, children etc) should be looking for accommodation within the private rental market. Please visit the Off- Campus Housing Service section on the Monash Residential Services website to get information about renting privately.

  7. I want to apply for accommodation along with three friends what do I do?
    Students who are friends and who want to share an apartment together at Mews can do that, depending of the availability of rooms. All apartments are 5 bedrooms and 1 additional resident will be placed along with you. All apartments in the International Mews are allocated by single gender, so if your group is mixed gender you will not be able to share the same flat.

  8. I am an Australian (local/domestic) student can I live at the International Mews?
    Yes, local Australian students can apply for residency at the International Mews. However, international students will be given first priority.

  9. I am an international student and I want to know if I am guaranteed a place at the International Mews now that I have received my full offer from Monash University?
    The only time a student is guaranteed accommodation at the International Mews is when that student has received and accepted an offer for accommodation at the International Mews and made the required payment.

  10. How do I pay my Application or Building & Amenities Fee from overseas?
    If you are applying from overseas you need to obtain a Bank Draft. The Draft must be made through a bank that is affiliated to a bank in Australia, should be in Australian dollars and be made payable to 'Monash University'.

  11. Do I require a referee?
    No referee is required for a student resident application.

  12. Should I advise Caulfield Residential about the course I have been offered at University?
    In your Application Form you are required to state the course that you intend studying at University. This may change from the time you actually completed the application up to the time that you take up residency. Please update the residential office with any changes.

Facilities and Services

  1. What support services are available on campus?
    At Caulfield Residential each of the Halls/Flats has an appointed Residential Support Team in place. The Residential Support Team consists of a Residential Supervisor, Residential Support assistant and Resident Advisors. The members of this team all live on campus and are available 24/7. The Residential Support Team organizes a number of social programs throughout the year for their residents.
  2. Can I cater for my own meals?
    Yes. Each apartment has the following facilities:
    o Fully equipped kitchen (Fridge, Dishwasher & Microwave, Toaster and Rice cooker);
    o Lounge/dining area
    o Fully equipped laundry (washing machine and clothes dryer - not coin operated)
    o Other Equipment (Ironing board) Residents need to bring their own pots, pans, crockery and cutlery.

  3. Can a resident's guests be accommodated in the flat?
    No. You need to find alternate accommodation for your guest.

  4. In case of an emergency, who do I contact if I need immediate assistance after hours?
    If you have a problem during office hours Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm contact the Residential Office. After Hours and in case of an emergency contact the Residential Support Team.

  5. On my arrival, how can I collect my room keys, if the Residential Office is closed?
    The Residential Office is open 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday, please come to the Residential Office for key collection. The office is located at the Caulfield Campus, Building A Room 1.29. The office is away from the International Mews, please keep your transport waiting while you collect your keys. For after office hours and weekend arrivals you need to make prior arrangements with the residential office for key collection.

  6. If my accommodation and other expenses are funded through a scholarship, am I able to be invoiced on a full board plan?
    Yes. We are able to make special arrangements if required to ensure all the charges go on to your accommodation account.

  7. Will Monash Residential Services arrange Airport Reception for me from the Airport to the International Mews?
    Monash International provides the Airport Reception pickup service from the Airport. Students who are going to be staying at the International Mews while they are studying at Monash University Caulfield Campus should contact Monash International to book Airport Reception pickups.

  1. What is the address of the International Mews?
    The address is 999 Dandenong Road, Malvern East and 1 Warley Road, Malvern East

  2. How far (walking distance) is the International Mews from Caulfield Campus?
    It is less than 10mins walk from the International Mews to Caulfield campus.

  3. Do I have to / can I share a bedroom?
    All bedrooms at the International Mews are single; for one student only.

  4. Do the bedrooms have private bathrooms?
    All bathroom facilities are shared. There are no bedrooms with private bathrooms at the International Mews.

  5. What is the difference between a small room and a standard room?
    The only difference between the two rooms is the physical space available in the room. The standard rooms are larger than the small rooms. All other aspects of the bedrooms are identical.

  6. Do I need to bring bed sheets, blankets & a pillow with me?
    Students will need to supply their own bedding (i.e. sheets, blankets/doona and pillow/s). Monash Residential Services supplies only the mattress and mattress protector.

  7. What size are the beds in the bedrooms?
    The beds are a standard single size (approx. 6ft x 3ft).

  8. Do I need to bring an iron with me?
    Whilst Monash Residential Services supplies the ironing board, residents will need to provide their own irons.

  9. Is there a phone line in my bedroom?
    All bedrooms have a private phone line. However, it is the responsibility of the resident to activate that phone line and open an account with their chosen provider.

  10. Can I get access to the internet from my bedroom?
    All phone lines at the International Mews can provide either dial-up or broadband internet service. It is the responsibility of the resident to arrange their own service provider. The International Mews does not have a LAN connection to Caulfield Campus.

  11. What Contents Insurance Company do you recommend?
    Whilst Caulfield Residential do not recommend any particular insurance company we do recommend that personal property is adequately insured.

  12. Can I store my belongings when I go home for the long vacation?
    Caulfield Residential does not provide any storage facilities. Please look up the yellow pages for self storage providers in the area.

Rental Rates

  1. What is included in the accommodation fees?
    o 10 months accommodation at the International mews
    o Single furnished bedroom
    o All utilities except Electricity and Telephone
    o Access to laundry facilities
    o Use of kitchen facilities
    Note: Food is not included in the rental rates.

  2. How do I pay my rental fees?
    o By Cash - at Clayton campus student services (Building 3C)
    o BPAY - through your bank
    o Online - by credit card
    o Telephone - by credit card
    o Post - bank draft or cheque

    Note: Direct Debit from your bank is not one of the payment options Payment details are located at the bottom of the invoice. Residents are billed monthly and the invoices are delivered to the student's mailboxes in their respective halls

  3. Are utilities included in the Accommodation Fee?
    Only electricity is charged in addition to the monthly accommodation fee. Residents are not charged for water or gas usage. Telephone/Internet services are the responsibility of the Resident.

  4. What is the approximate cost to live at International Mews (per week, per month)?
    Please refer to the Accommodation Fee Regulations on the MRS web page to calculate the cost of living at the International Mews.
