Water Savings at Monash Residential Services

Shower head image

Between 2003 and 2005 Monash Residential Service in conjunction with Yarra Valley Water installed over 700 in-line water flow restriction valves. A water audit by Monash University OHSE Branch showed that MRS had achieved a 30% savings on water usage.

Over the summer of 2006/2007 Monash Residential Services installed water saver shower heads to further decrease water usage in showers and to come into line with the Australian standard. The Australian standard states that flow rates between 7.5 and 9.0 litres per minute achieve a 3 star rating (out of a possible of 3 stars)

Below is a table of the savings that would be achieved over a 12 months period with the introduction of the new 3 star rated shower heads.  An Olympic sized swimming pool holds 2.5 million litres of water.

In addition at Clayton Residential (Halls of Residence) the old toilet flushing values have been replaced with new duel flush valves.  Currently it is estimated that the toilets use 10.2 million litres.  With the new half and full flushing valves the estimated usage will drop to 4.7 million litres, saving 5.5 million litres which is equivalent to 2.23 Olympic size swimming pools.
