Computer network connection guides - Linux
What you will need?
- A computer with a network card installed.
- A straight-through network cable.
- Your authcate (monash computer username and password) details.
Steps to register your network card
- Open a terminal window.
- In the window which appears, type /sbin/ifconfig and press Enter.
- In the information which appears, find HWAddr and make a note of the value which follows it. It should always look like this (a combination of numbers and letters, 12 digits):

- On a computer which is already connected to the internet (either a friend’s or in the Richardson computer lab), go to
http://addhost.its.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/register
- Enter your authcate username and password in the box.
- For Ethernet Address in the line which says <your authcate>-self.mrs, type in the Physical Address from step 3.
- Enter your e-mail address in the Contact information box, then click Register.
- In approximately 30 minutes, your computer will be able to connect to the network.
