Computer Network Connection Guide - Windows

What you will need?

  • A computer with a network card installed.
  • A straight-through network cable.
  • Your authcate (monash computer username and password) details.

Steps to register your network card

  1. Go to the Start Menu, and choose Run. Type in cmd for Windows XP or 2000, or command for Windows 95, 98 and ME, then click OK.
  2. In the window which appears, type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
  3. In the information which appears, find Physical Address and make a note of the value. It should always look like this (a combination of numbers and letters, 12 digits):
    XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
  4. On a computer which is already connected to the internet (either a friend’s or in the Richardson computer lab), go to
    http://addhost.its.monash.edu.au/cgi-bin/register
  5. Enter your authcate username and password in the box.
  6. For Ethernet Address in the line which says <your authcate>-self.mrs, type in the Physical Address from step 3.
  7. Enter your e-mail address in the Contact information box, then click Register.
  8. In approximately 30 minutes, your computer will be able to connect to the network.
