Jackomos Hall is named in honour and recognition of Mrs Merle Jackomos OAM

Merle Jackomos OAM helped found the National Aboriginal & Islander Women's Council, with Aunty Geraldine Briggs, and of which she became Victorian Vice-President.
Merle also helped establish the Aboriginal Elders Community Services, the Aboriginal Legal Service, Aboriginal Women's Refuge and Aboriginal health Service.
In 1972, Merle was elected to the Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Advisory Council and was later appointed Director Aboriginal Hostels Ltd.

Jackomos Hall accommodates 300 residents in single occupancy self-contained private studio apartments. 

Each studio apartment is slightly larger than 20 sqm in size and contains:

kitchen facilities [with 2 burner hot plate, microwave/convection oven, sink, ¾ fridge, bench, cupboards], en-suite [with toilet, shower, hand basin, vanity unit, towel rails], wardrobes, drawers, desk, desk chair, book shelf, small dining table and chair, king single bed and mattress, mattress protector, bedside drawers, ceiling fan, hot water hydronic heating, block out blinds, VOIP handsets with direct access to VOIP telephone connection points and hard wired Internet access [with speeds up to 1Gb per sec] 

Communal facilities are generous;

 

Jackomos Hall is five storeys in height and is divided into two wings, each wing of 30 residents will have access to their own communal meeting/study/social room on each floor.  Jackomos Hall also has a main common room, a music room, a games room, a communal laundry, bike storage area and individual mailboxes, and central lifts.

 

Jackomos Hall includes 10 apartments which have been designed with disability access features and are approximately 50% larger [30sqm] than the standard apartment [20sqm].  General accessibility features have been incorporated throughout both buildings.

 

Jackomos Hall has been designed to achieve a Five Star Green Building Council of Australia rating, an Australian excellence award in environmentally frendly design.
